Parshas Bamidbar – The Greatest Thing In The World

Posted on May 16, 2023May 16, 2023 By parsha

“And then the sons of Kehath should come to carry…” (Bamidbar 4:15)

The Gemara (Sotah 35a) teaches us that the holy Ark was in reality not borne by others: It supported its bearers. The Pasuk (above) teaches that the sons of Kehath came to carry the Ark, but in reality, they were carried by it. Rav Chaim of Volozhin zt”l teaches that this is a source of inspiration for those who carry the financial responsibility for Torah institutions on their shoulders. When the burden becomes large, and what perhaps may seem unbearable, let them remember that the Ark, (the symbol of the Torah) carries its “bearers.” Torah will survive and it will lift those who carry it.

On the other hand, we learn that even one who supports Torah must set aside time to learn as well. The following story illustrates this point:  The heads of several institutions once brought one of their major supporters to see Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l. They wanted Rav Chaim to praise the man for his contributions. When the man was brought into Rav Chaim’s home, Rav Chaim turned to the man and asked, “Do you devote time to learn Torah, yourself as well? Talmud Torah is the most important mitzvah!”

The wealthy man didn’t answer, and it was apparent that this man did not set aside time to learn Torah. Rav Chaim did not abandon this topic. He told his visitor that he must set aside time to learn. In the  meantime, the heads of the institutions felt uncomfortable. Instead of praises, the donor received an open rebuke. Who knew what his reaction would be and how this would affect his future support?

To their amazement, at the visit’s conclusion, the philanthropist told them, “I really enjoyed this visit, and because of what Rav Chaim said, I plan to start learning Torah on a regular basis!

According to Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, this pasuk (above) teaches us that young scholars are capable of growing into a position of leadership. Once, Rav Aharon recommended  a talented, young scholar to head a new Yeshiva. The young man was demurred, claiming that he was unfit for the position. Rav Aharon told him: “The Ark carries those who carry it. Once you show a willingness to assume  the burden of leadership, the Torah will lift you and enable you to rise to the challenge.” May we all continue bringing Hashem’s Torah into our lives: By supporting it and most importantly – by learning it!
